Although the tradition of aloe tapping, by the indigenous people, for commercial purposes is well established, it has never been formalised. In order for the Nagoya Protocol, through the DEA’s Biodiversity Economic Strategy, to achieve its goals, the practices and processes of traditional commercial aloe tapping will need to be formalized and structured. The Traditional Tapper Registration Programme, (TRP), is aimed at working with indigenous communities to identify individuals that have been, or are involved in, commercial aloe tapping.
The Cape Aloe Movement maintains a central Traditional Tapper Register, (TTR), for managing:
- Tapper personal details.
- Training, qualifications and (years of) experience details.
- Tapping activities.
- Disbursements.
